Lol-Ha in Akumal

You often hear people refer to a restaurant and say, ‘there is something for everyone there.’  Well in the case of Lol-Ha that is especially true.  I was thinking about this the other day while looking at their menu and trying to decide what to get.  I first found Lol-Ha in 2000 while I was traveling with a film crew. I have returned several times every year since and, now that we live 15 minutes up the highway, it is our go to spot.  When I was traveling for business, and let’s admit it, a little pleasure, I would enjoy all the local cuisine I could at Lol-Ha. Some of my favorites were, and still are, the Cochinita Pibil, which is a pulled pork cooked in the ground with Yucatecan spices the original Maya way and the chili relleno, which is the best I have ever had - one I judge all others by - it is filled with delicious cheese covered in an egg batter and cooked to perfection.  I have eaten probably everything on the menu over the years.  The whole fish is to die for, tacos, quesadillas, flautas all amazing.  What I must admit is that I never considered ordering what I would call American cuisine.  Why would I?  I had limited time to enjoy the numerous Mexican dishes.

Fast forward to now, we have been living here almost 2 years, and I have to say, when I miss the foods from the States, I immediately think of going to Lol-Ha.  The first dish that won me over to the other half of the menu was the wings. I was sorely missing a good chicken wing and Lol-Ha did not let me down. They are meaty, cooked to perfection and come with a buffalo dipping sauce, as well as blue cheese or ranch dressing.  Since then, I have expanded my choices to include prime rib, fish and chips, pasta, pizza, the most amazing hot dog and probably one of the best hamburgers around.

So, when I say there is something for everyone, I really mean it.  Whether you are a tourist looking to try some traditional Mexican or Maya cuisine or an expat missing some of your favorite dishes from home, you will find what you crave at Lol-Ha.  On top of that you get it all while sitting and looking at one of the best views on one of the best beaches in the world.  You can get all this and an amazing Happy Hour with half price cocktails from 5:30 to 6:30. Still not convinced? Then wait until you meet the staff.  Good food, great location and some of the friendliest staff around makes this a consistently great choice for us.

I also recommend it if you are planning an event of any size.  Lol-Ha is located on the grounds of Hotel Akumal Caribe, with its beach front hotel and garden bungalows, it is the perfect spot.  Over the years I have done numerous events here from fundraisers, retreats, workshops, training sessions, High School trips, Special birthdays and even our second wedding!  Even living just 15 minutes away we love having our special occasions here, and every now and then we book a hotel room to make a special weekend of it.  Why risk driving home when you can spend the day at the beach, snorkel with the turtles, take a dip in the pool, shower, have an amazing meal with cocktails and spend the night, waking in the morning to sounds of the birds and an early morning stroll on the beach?!
